These guys, these outcasts from popular society and self-exulted super geeks, realized that the simple lack of people was the major problem that needed to be overcome. We couldnít just make people to repel the invasion and battle the Kovs, we didnít have that much time, so the guys finished development of a process that was a luxury for the wealthy and most intelligent people in the past. The people died in the process, all of them, but that was the point. Their minds were, however, downloaded into a solid state memory storage device so that their mind could live on as a digital being. Not only this, but the person could communicate through a computer to other people and teach them things as well as be taught. The thing that these guys added to the system was the ability for the person to transfer itself from computer to computer through an interlink and control that computer, not just live in it. The only drawback of this process was that the actual downloading of the mind could not happen, only the conscience was transferred, so the person was still alive in the hosting capsule, but only his mind.

The great generals, world leaders, and minds of the past nuclear war had themselves downloaded into computers to serve as counselors for the future and help us to prevent another terror like that was. They, as well as AIs recently programmed to act as different advisors: war, social, liberal, conservative, ect, were booted up for the first time to give guidance to us and are now known as the Central AI. I love these guys, one is my great grandfather, and they behaved as people, not computers. As they are stored in all major computers, they were not harmed by the destruction of the central dome. In contrast, they directed construction of the most high tech and largest military base ever.

The base took up the entire dome, a total of 200 square miles plus underground storage 4 levels deep. The energy dome was still intact, but thanks to the bomb, the entire surface was conveniently made smooth. It took only 4 months to develop and build thanks to new teraforming EM converters and AI controlled machinery, but people were still needed to give orders to the machines and do the touch up work. The top level was devoted to training and constant readiness forces, while the first underground level was for repairs and storage, the second was entirely storage, the third was command centers, R and D, habitat, and the fourth was heavy machinery for life support, EM converters, power extracting units, and shield generators. The top training and CR level was divided into three separate sectors separated by energy walls to aid in survival chances in case of an attack or internal problem. There were two training areas that took up half of the top, and the rest was a CR base.

The first time I beamed into it, I was awe struck. It was flat as the eye could see, but the constant movement of the war machines, AI controlled vehicles, and people made the place seem alive, even though there were only 5000 humans in the entire dome. The elevator shafts to get to the lower levels were only given away by large buildings that held them, sticking up from the ground as blocks 150 feet on each side. Everything was huge, the rooms for storage were massive, as were the machines, even the fat and good-natured base commander was big enough to have special doors installed for him. We made ready for war with all speed. I joined the cause at 16, the legal age for volunteering, as a number cruncher; my parents were died from poisoned food years and years ago.

During that time, the Taerkasts made a second invasion into southern Europe, using the same tactics as before, but pushed harder and deeper than ever, even advancing as far north as The Empire of Poland. They invaded the low population areas as before, and became entangled in war with the Gorkovs, avoiding the Mykos like the plague that they were. The Black Sect also saw some action according to intel. They took "their" Bronsteijns and began to beat the Taerks out of the eastern areas of Europe, but because they were renegades and not a real faction, they stayed around Romania, Bulgaria, and the Black Sea in general due to lack of personnel. We still donít know why they turned, but we do know they developed their broadcastable stealth shielding at this time, a system that made all of the different types of craft they stole and "tagged" with their radio frequency invisible to radar without any structural modifications. The Mykos apparently stopped going west near the ruins of Moscow, but the northern invasion force turned west, capturing all of Scandinavia and nearing our boarders. The Kovs ruled the central of Europe; they clashed hard with the Taerks at every turn.

The only problem that we had was that all of our resources were going into developing a weapon of such scale that it could turn the war for us. Remember the expanded consciousness system made earlier? A war machine with a human synaptic donor unit, or a SDU, as its mind was being prepared to be sent into battle with all the systems of a base, the versatility of a company of shock troops, and the maneuverability of a mobile command post, but with one human mind controlling it all supported by the most advanced AI ever. There were so few humans left in the years following The Big Mistake. Humans were too precious to send into battle when the offworlders came. And so we created the war machines, the savior machines, the hoststation machines. But to save us they needed a single human integrated into their empathic net, for it was the humanís wetware that provided the passions of love for the planet, and enough fear to temper decisions. It was completed and hailed as a triumph of engineering and sent into battle with Julianne Norse as SDU1.

It was a wondrous machine, it was sent through a beam gate into a hostile area where SDU1 simply thought, and onboard EM converters kicked into action to produce armies of Studston Corporation battle tanks, attack choppers, and even light fighters. If attacked by the AI controlled vehicles of the other factions, it would defend itself with rapid-fire rockets from four auto targeting turrets. The best part was that SDU1 could transfer her consciousness to the AI controlled vehicles and drive them as you normally would. Even better, if the vehicle was destroyed, her consciousness was still alive and well in the hoststation, the name given to the great machine, and she could just "jump" into another vehicle.

The machine itself was about 50 feet tall, having an oval shaped hull about 30 feet around containing a center plasma storage chamber, host unit, and machinery for EM conversion and life support. Atop it was something like a radio and radar tower all in one with a rocket cannon on top. The entire machine was levitated by Studston hover coils about 30 feet off the ground and propelled forward by directional energy thrusters integrated into the hull.

None of the other factions stood a chance with people still commanding AI to do what people could do so much better. She pushed and pushed, attempting to reach "Parasite City," very far from any Resistance base, special ops forces, or anything. We lost contact with SDU1 a mere 6 weeks into her campaign. No one knew what happened, she just disappeared. Assuming that she was destroyed by the Mykonians so far east, we built another. This time we integrated an automatic mind downloading system to add the personís mind to the Central AI constantly, keeping the personís mind for advice on further missions.

SDU2 was a waste of effort; he was too ambitious and was killed in Poland by the Mykos a week into his mission. The worst part was that his host station was largely intact when it went off-line, and the Gorkovs risked everything to capture it. The leading engineer, Eerie Trantulov, reverse engineered it and created a smaller saucer shaped version, the Turantul, but armed with twin EMP cannons to compensate for its lack of plasma reservoirs. These EMP cannons, while not designed to destroy circuits, delivered a jolt that caused physical damage to objects. It was easily constructed, and they were fielded within a month of SDU1ís hoststationís capturing.

As a result, SDU3ís hoststation was given a newly developed short-range teleporter to get itself out of danger quickly. His too was destroyed, but in southern France by the Taerkasts. His machine was mostly destroyed, so nothing could be studied, but the idea of a mobile command ship appealed to the Taerks. They didnít really develop a new machine, but using their own form of magic, alchemy, or something they built a floating fortress that looked like a box shaped hotel, complete with Victorian style architecture. Its 30 occupants were devoted to keeping all the systems running, the weapons armed, and actually piloting the machine and controlling the AI. Their thing didnít have a SDU, but people flying it. This made their ability to think better, but the loss of life when one was taken out was massive. The fortress defended itself with four shell cannons, one on each corner. Although slow firing, the ballistic shells dealt massive blows to even the most hardened targets.

SDU4, 5, and 6 all controlled the same model of hoststation, but with slightly upgraded systems with each one. SDU6ís had a system to siphon off excess energy and send it to the EM converters to make additional vehicles. They all died, though, killed by the Gorkovs in Western Europe. Something big was happening, the people I saw were always scurrying around, demanding faster work.

I did that which I could, but I couldnít keep up with the load. I tried prioritizing the stuff, getting the important work done quickly, but the loads just got heavier and heavier. I never stopped, or at least that is what people told me, to take any break. I went home after 14-hour days, dead from exhaustion. I did that for 3 months and Jolly Jack, the base commander, came to my house one night and asked if I would like eternal life in the memory banks of Central AI as SDU7.

I will use the missions as the base, and create a blow by blow story of the missions, but with a freer feel than the game had.  Just wait, I am half done with the first mission.  Chapter 3 will be "Intergration."
